COURTYARD APARTMENT

BEFORE

Set in the heritage conservation estate of Tiong Bahru in Singapore, we sought to create a contemporary living retreat within the Art Deco influenced pre-war building.

The unique elongated space is divided into three main areas laid linearly with varying degree of privacy corresponding to permeability of natural light. The most intimate space has an unsuite bath, fully clad in marble, which features a large one-piece two-way mirror separating the shower from the sleeping area. It is hidden inconspicuously behind shelves designed for the display of antique vases at the main entrance hallway.

Walking past the shelves one would enter into the living & study area, on elevated floor level, which serves as a semi-private space for lounging and work. From which, one would take a few steps leading down to a large dining and open-to-sky courtyard area for entertainment of guests.

Absolute privacy for both owner and neighbours was achieved by using sound proofing wall panels, double glazed windows and acoustic doors. Much design attention was paid to integrate these systems the design of the spaces.
